Interpreting Techniques

Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpretation is a real-time translation method where the interpreter translates a message from a source language to a target language as the speaker is speaking. Larger conferences, congresses, meetings, and court proceedings typically require simultaneous interpretation services using interpreting booths.

Speaking over a microphone to deliver the translated message to the audience, the interpreter uses technological equipment while seated in a soundproof booth. Experts in their field, the interpreters can converse and listen simultaneously.

Since simultaneous interpretation is a mentally demanding job that requires intense concentration, the interpreters usually work in pairs. Specifically, they take turns every 20-30 minutes to avoid mental fatigue.

Consecutive Interpretation

Consecutive interpretation frequently supports small business meetings, site visits and social engagements. It offers a flexible and accurate translation method for situations where a real-time approach isn’t necessary and pauses for interpretation are possible.

Consecutive interpretation is a type of translation where the interpreter listens to a segment of speech in one language (source language) and then translates it into another language (target language) after the speaker has paused. This stands in contrast to simultaneous interpretation, which happens in real-time.

Consecutive interpretation typically doesn’t require specialised equipment. The interpreter listens attentively to the speaker and may take notes to aid in translating during pauses.

Conference Interpreting (on-site or remote)

At international summits, congresses, conferences or lectures, the participants often speak different languages. To ensure that everyone can follow the speaker, conference interpreters translate what is said into the respective target languages. Depending on the context and number of participants, various interpreting methods (simultaneous, consecutive, etc.) are used, with simultaneous interpreting being the most common method at large conferences and meetings.
Preparation is crucial: Before an interpreting assignment, interpreters familiarise themselves with the subject matter and terminology to deliver an accurate and nuanced translation.

Simultaneous Interpretation with Portable Equipment

Sometimes, simultaneous interpretation in a booth is not feasible as there is no space for a booth or the group is required to move around, for example during a field visit. In this case, our professional interpreting services can provide interpreters with portable interpreting equipment, also called tour guide or audio guide system. The equipment typically consists of a transmitter for the interpreter, receivers with headphones for the listeners, and a central relay system to transmit the interpreted signal.

Sign Language Interpretation

Sign language interpretation services play a vital role in bridging the communication gap for the deaf and hard of hearing community. Our highly skilled interpreters act as a crucial link, translating spoken language into sign language and vice versa. As a result, everyone can fully engage and participate in meetings, appointments, and events without missing any important information or facing misunderstandings.

Our services are designed to break down communication barriers and foster a truly inclusive environment where accessibility is prioritised. Therefore, by promoting clear communication for all, we help create a space where everyone feels valued and understood.
Together, we can make inclusivity a reality.

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation

Since 2020 and the Covid-19 crisis, Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) and Video Remote Interpretation (VRI) have surged in popularity. With on-site meetings limited, webinars and video conferences have become essential for many companies. Modern interpreting platforms now let attendees listen in their preferred language while interpreters work remotely.
Just like in-person events, online conferences need careful planning. A moderator is crucial for managing participant access, monitoring the event, introducing speakers, and leading Q&A sessions.
Interpreters can work from home, their office, or a specialised interpreting hub—a studio with professional equipment and technical support. EuroMinds Linguistics partners with such hubs and can help set up an interpreting hub for your event.

We Work with Your Existing Tools

Interpreting Hubs

Since the pandemic at the latest, we have all become familiar with the typical challenges of virtual meetings: an unstable internet connection, poor image quality or disruptive background noise. However, interpreters in particular rely on consistently high sound quality to be able to work accurately and reliably. High-quality technical equipment is therefore essential for remote interpreting.
The best and most stable solution is to connect the interpreters from so-called interpreting hubs. The booths are equipped with the latest conference technology, ensuring the highest quality standards. What’s more, professional conference technicians are also on hand to support the interpreting team and quickly clarify technical issues if necessary, ensuring that your multilingual events run smoothly.

Whispered Interpretation (Chuchotage)

This form of interpretation is used when the meeting takes place in one language, but only one or two participants speak a different language. In this case, the interpreter sits or stands next to or behind the person (maximum two people) requiring interpretation and whispers the interpretation directly into the participant’s ear. This method is a less formal type of interpretation and does not require any special equipment. Our professional interpreting services ensure effective communication in such settings.

Liaison Interpretation

Liaison interpretation, also known as bilateral interpretation or escort interpreting, is  a form of consecutive interpretation used for facilitating communication between two or a small group of people who speak different languages. This approach is typically used in informal situations like business meetings, factory tours, medical appointments, or social gatherings where a few people require language assistance.
The interpreter translates after short segments of conversation, when the speaker takes a break.
